How It Works

1

Measure Bed

Enter the length and width of your raised bed or planting area.

2

Select Crop

Choose what you want to grow. Different plants require different spacing.

3

Get Counts

See how many plants fit and how much soil you need to fill the bed.

Square Foot Gardening Explained

The "Square Foot" method divides your garden into 1x1 foot sections. Instead of planting in long rows, you plant a specific number of crops in each square.

This method saves space, reduces weeding, and makes planning easy. For example, you can fit 1 tomato, 4 leafy greens, or 16 carrots in a single square foot!

Soil Depth Matters

6-8 Inches: Sufficient for shallow-rooted crops like lettuce, herbs, and beans.

12-18 Inches: Recommended for root vegetables (carrots, potatoes) and large plants like tomatoes to allow deep root growth and moisture retention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sunlight does my garden need?
Most fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, squash) need full sun, which means 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Leafy greens and root vegetables can tolerate partial shade (4-6 hours).
What is the best soil for raised beds?
A popular mix is 1/3 topsoil, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 coarse vermiculite or peat moss. This blend provides excellent drainage, nutrient retention, and aeration.
How often should I water?
Gardens generally need about 1 inch of water per week. In hot summer weather, you may need to water daily. The soil should be moist 1 inch below the surface.
What is companion planting?
Companion planting involves placing certain plants together to benefit each other. For example, planting basil near tomatoes is believed to improve flavor and repel pests.
Should I start from seed or buy plants?
Root vegetables (carrots, radishes) grow best from seed sown directly in the garden. Tomatoes and peppers need a long growing season, so it's easier to buy transplants or start seeds indoors weeks early.
