Why Choose Bamboo?

Bamboo is technically a grass, not a wood, which allows it to regenerate in 5-7 years compared to 50+ years for hardwood trees. This makes it a sustainable choice.

Hardness Factor: While traditional bamboo is similar to Walnut, Strand Woven bamboo is compressed under extreme heat and pressure, creating a board that rivals Brazilian Teak in hardness (3000+ Janka rating).

Installation Considerations

Moisture: Like hardwood, solid bamboo expands and contracts. It needs to be acclimated to your home's humidity for at least 72 hours before installation.

Basements: Solid bamboo is generally not recommended for below-grade basements due to moisture. Engineered bamboo (with a stable core) is the safer choice for these areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bamboo flooring harder than oak?
It depends on the type. Standard vertical or horizontal bamboo is comparable to Red Oak. However, Strand Woven bamboo is significantly harder, often rating 3000+ on the Janka hardness scale, making it one of the hardest floors available.
Can I install bamboo flooring in a basement?
Solid bamboo should not be installed in basements due to moisture fluctuations. However, engineered bamboo flooring is stable enough for below-grade installation if a proper moisture barrier is used.
Is bamboo flooring safe for pets?
Yes, but quality matters. Soft "carbonized" bamboo can dent easily under dog claws. We highly recommend Strand Woven bamboo for pet owners as it is extremely resistant to scratches and dents.
Does bamboo flooring fade in sunlight?
Like most natural wood products, bamboo can discolor over time with prolonged exposure to direct UV sunlight. Using curtains or UV-protective window coatings can help preserve the color.
Is bamboo water resistant?
Bamboo is slightly more water-resistant than hardwood, but it is not waterproof. Spills should be wiped up immediately. Standing water can cause swelling and warping.
Can I refinish bamboo floors?
Solid bamboo flooring can typically be refinished 2-3 times. Engineered bamboo generally cannot be refinished, or perhaps only once if the top wear layer is thick enough (3mm+).
Is bamboo cheaper than hardwood?
Generally, yes. Quality bamboo typically costs $3-$8 per sq. ft., whereas solid hardwood usually runs $5-$12 per sq. ft. It offers a premium look for a mid-range price.
How should I clean my bamboo floor?
Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment or a dry dust mop. For mopping, use a dedicated hardwood floor cleaner and a damp (not wet) mop. Never use steam mops or wet mops.
