A Gazebo Roof Calculator estimates the total surface area and material requirements for various gazebo shapes. Whether you're roofing a simple square structure or a complex octagon, knowing the exact roof area is crucial for ordering shingles or metal sheets. It also calculates framing details like the common run, rise, and hip rafter lengths based on your chosen roof pitch.
Plan your roofing.
Choose between square, hexagonal, or octagonal layouts. The geometry changes the roof area significantly.
Enter the roof pitch (e.g., 6/12). Steeper roofs have larger surface areas and require longer hip rafters.
View the total square footage and estimated number of shingle bundles needed for the job.
The roof area is calculated by summing the area of the triangular (or trapezoidal) roof planes. The slope length (slant height) is key.
Shingles: A standard bundle of asphalt shingles covers approximately 33.3 square feet. To find the number of bundles, divide the total roof area by 33.3 and round up. Always add 10-15% for waste, especially on hip roofs like gazebos where many cuts are needed.
Hip Caps: Don't forget the ridge caps! You'll need to measure the total length of all hip rafters to order enough cap shingles or metal flashing.
For a standard 6/12 pitch, a 12' octagon gazebo has roughly 130-140 sq ft of roof area. You would need about 5 bundles of shingles, including waste.
Common pitches range from 4/12 to 8/12. A 6/12 pitch (26.6 degrees) is very popular as it offers a good balance of aesthetics and drainage without being too difficult to shingle.
Typically, you enter the post-to-post dimensions, and the calculator adds the overhang separately. This ensures the roof area covers the eaves properly.
Measure from the center of one post to the center of the adjacent post. For regular polygons (hex/oct), all sides should be equal.
The hip rafter goes from the center peak to the corner of the roof. It is longer than the common rafter. This calculator provides the hip length based on the run (apothem/radius) and rise.
For gazebo roofs, waste is high due to the triangular shapes. It's recommended to add 15-20% for waste when ordering shingles or metal.
Yes. The total surface area is the same regardless of material. Just ensure you order enough linear feet of ridge cap for the hips.
The apothem is the horizontal distance from the center of the gazebo to the midpoint of a side wall. It represents the "run" for the common rafter slope calculation.
