Common Run (Apothem) = Distance from center to side midpoint
Rise = Common Run × (Pitch/12)
Slope Length = √(Run² + Rise²)
Roof Area = 0.5 × Perimeter × Slope Length
Calculating Materials
Shingles: A standard bundle of asphalt shingles covers approximately 33.3 square feet. To find the number of bundles, divide the total roof area by 33.3 and round up. Always add 10-15% for waste, especially on hip roofs like gazebos where many cuts are needed.
Hip Caps: Don't forget the ridge caps! You'll need to measure the total length of all hip rafters to order enough cap shingles or metal flashing.
