What is a Roof Painting Calculator?

A Roof Painting Calculator helps homeowners and contractors estimate the amount of paint required for a roof restoration project. Unlike painting a flat wall, a roof has a slope (pitch) and often a textured surface (corrugations or tiles) that significantly increases the total surface area. This tool adjusts for those factors to prevent under-ordering.

How to Estimate Roof Paint

3 Core Factors

The variables that change area.

1

Footprint Area

Measure the length and width of the house on the ground (including eaves/overhangs).

2

Pitch Multiplier

A steep roof has much more surface area than a flat one. We apply a multiplier based on the slope angle.

3

Material Factor

Corrugated iron adds ~15% more area due to waves. Concrete tiles add ~30% due to porosity and shape.

The Calculation Logic

Area & Volume Math

We start with the flat footprint and expand it based on geometry and texture.

Footprint = Length × Width
Actual Area = Footprint × Pitch Multiplier × Material Factor
Total Paint Area = Actual Area × Number of Coats
Gallons Needed = Total Paint Area / Coverage Rate

Don't Forget the Details

Corrugations: The "waves" in metal roofing increase the surface area by about 12-15% compared to a flat sheet. If you measure just the flat length and width, you will be short on paint.

Porosity: Old concrete tiles are very porous and "thirsty." The first coat (primer/sealer) will often cover significantly less area than the subsequent topcoats. It is wise to budget extra for that first layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you don't have the plans, you can estimate. A "Standard" walkable roof is usually around 18-22°. If it's too steep to walk on comfortably, it's likely "Steep" (30°+). You can also use a level and tape measure in the attic to find the rise over run.

Yes! Pressure washing is critical to remove moss, mold, lichen, and oxidized paint. Painting over a dirty roof will result in peeling within a year.

For concrete tiles, a sealer is essential to bind the chalky surface. For metal roofs, a specialized metal primer is needed if there is any rust or bare metal exposed.

Lighter colors reflect more heat, keeping the home cooler and potentially extending the lifespan of the paint coating. Darker colors absorb heat, which can increase attic temperatures.

An airless sprayer is highly recommended for roofs, especially corrugated or tiled ones, as it gets paint into all the gaps easily. Rolling a roof is very labor-intensive and difficult on textured surfaces.

Roof paint is typically sold in larger quantities than wall paint. A standard pail (or bucket) in the US is 5 gallons. In metric countries, it's often 10 or 20 liters.
